Last Thursday, Shulena S. Weldon died as she was hit by a police vehicle while crossing Market Street at around 8:00 a.m. State police said that a Harrisburg police SUV struck and killed Shulena Weldon at 20th and Market streets Thursday morning.

A memorial fund has been set up to help pay for the funeral expenses of Shulena after a city policeman struck her with a police vehicle as she crossed Market St. at about 8:15 a.m. on Thursday.

All the donations were deposited in any Metro Bank by checks payable to Shulena S. Weldon Memorial Fund, courtesy of Metro Bank, 101 N. Second St., Harrisburg 17101.

Weldon, who was 36, was hit after crossing the intersection of 20th and Market streets.

According to Dauphin County Coroner Graham Hetrick there were witnesses who reported that Weldon, who must have been preoccupied suddenly darted in front of the police vehicle for unknown reasons.

A police vehicle driven by a police officer struck and killed this woman and citizen of this community. Whether the woman was hit because of her carelessly or not, the city has to help fund her funeral.

It was not the policeman’s fault as witnesses claimed that Shulena darted suddenly in front of the car. It could have been a private citizen who was behind the wheel and ended up hitting the women. It was such a tragedy as the woman was still young and has lots of years ahead of her.
