It was a shocker for many to hear the news that a journalist with so many awards and a fearless war correspondent died as a result of car accident in L.A. Michael Hastings whose story from Rolling Stone was responsible in toppling down a US general, was victim to a car mishap.

Many recalled that a Polk was awarded to Hastings for his magazine reporting called the Runaway General. This story was blamed for ending the career of General Stanley McChrystal  after report revealed how the military leaders candidly criticized the administration of Obama.

Last Tuesday, Rolling Stone confirmed the report that Hastings was fatal victim of a car mishap that morning and dubbing him as undaunted journalist.

General Stanley McChrystal was one of the top generals of the U.S. serving in Afghanistan where Hasting made the document of the general making unsavory remarks about the Obama administration, along with criticisms of the civilian commanders in the White House.

Due to the story, Barack Obama had the general removed from his leadership. He stated that the conduct stated in the report does not meet the standard that should be set by a commanding general. Statements such as this, undermines the civilian control of the military that is at the core of our democratic system.

Rolling Stone stated that Hastings as journalist had never been daunted by any political or military power. . Hastings was determined to expose the recklessness of a man leading what Hastings believed to be a reckless war.” Matt Farwell, who worked with Hastings on some of his recent pieces, told Rolling Stone: ” As a journalist he specialised in speaking truth to power and laying it all out there.

While other reporters were charmed by McChrystal’s inappropriate behavior and could have easily considered the whole episode as a kind of joke, Hastings wanted the public to know the thoughtless vocal statements coming from a man who was at the lead of what Hastings considered to be a thoughtless war.

Hasting’s co-writer, Matt Farwell said that Hastings as a journalist majored in speaking the truth about the powerful and laying it all out there for the public to see. He was well-focused in his reporting; causing others to be offended and angered in his reports. He is a forerunner for those who wanted to expose the truth to the public. He led by example.

Hastings is survived by his wife, writer Elise Jordan. Hastings’ widow was offended by Geraldo Rivera propounded unsavory remarks about her later husband.

Rivera considered Hasting’s death as tragic; but he added that many cannot forget how Hastings had destroyed the rising career of one of the best fighting generals.

Many readers and admirers of Hastings were offended by the remarks, especially Elise Jordan, Hastings’ widow who challenged the remarks given by Rivera.

The car crash of the journalist was doubtful as accident as some witnesses saw that the something inside the car exploded before it crashed. FBI issued a statement that they were not involved as they have not been following the whereabouts of the reporter as some others speculated.
