HOLMDEL — According to authorities, the driver of the bus carrying the Keansburg High School football team to a scrimmage was hospitalized after the vehicle left the road and hit a utility pole.
Following the accident, the driver of the bus was hospitalized. He was transporting the Keansburg High School football team to a scrimmage in Holmdel when the vehicle left the road and hit a utility pole, reported the authorities.
The bus driver, Frank Susino of Shamrock Bus Co. a resident of Keansburg, was taken to Bayshore Hospital in Holmdel. His medical condition was not specified, said police Sgt. Vincent Imperato.
Police are still investigating the incident and did not indicate whether Susino’s medical condition caused the accident. Susino’s injury was not life-threatening.
Authorities said that one student was also taken to Bayshore for treatment of minor injuries.
The accident occurred soon after 9 a.m. this morning, when the bus left the road and struck a telephone pole on Bethany Road near the intersection with Craig Street.
While Verizon work crews fix the downed pole that police reported was broken at its base, Bethany Road was closed between Old Manor Road and Telegraph Hill Road until further notice.
Another bus picked up the team and coaches and took them to the scrimmage at Holmdel High School. Keansburg Superintendent Jerry North said that all students had been examined, and the student who was hospitalized has been released.
