FUQUAY-VARINA – Just before 7 o’clock on Wednesday morning, a 17-year-old student was hit by a car while he was starting across Judd Parkway to get on a school bus.

Police identified the student as Luke Kurucz from the Fuquay-Varina High School. Police said that although he did not sustain life-threatening injuries, he was taken immediately to WakeMed Hospital.

The erring driver, identified as Blair Rowe Hale, age 31 was charged by the police who they said was driving the opposite way from the school bus. He also failed to reduce speed in order to avoid a collision.

According to the police said the accident happened at the intersection of Judd Parkway and Red Oak Tree Lane. The bus driver had put on flashing amber lights signifying the bus was going to stop when Kurucz started across the road.

On Monday night, a Durham middle school student died a week after her bicycle collided with a pickup truck.

The young fatality was identified as Kassie Graves, 12 years-old. She died as a result of her injuries. Students and staff at Githens Middle School where Kassie was in the 7th grade heard the news last Tuesday.

According to the police, Kassie was riding a bike near the entrance to the Bridges of Southpoint apartment complex on Dec. 10 when she hit the side of the truck traveling north on N.C. 751 near Calibre Park Drive. Since the girl ran a stop sign, no charges were anticipated against the driver of the pickup.

The Githens PTA announced that the entire school was grieving. They said that Kassie was a beloved student, musician and daughter. Her absence will be deeply felt by all.
