The new toll highway that is going to link San Antonio and Austin will be opening in November. It mainly has 85 mph posted as its speed limit which is going to be the highest speed limit in all of the country. At the moment, there are many people who are opposing this speed limit saying that the higher the speed, the higher the risk of accidents and fatalities.
Based on statistics, however, it has been seen that ever since the speed limits went up in different parts of the country, traffic fatalities have been decreasing. Today, 38 states have speed limits that go from 70 mph and up on the interstate highways. This new toll highway speed limit is being compared to the nonexistence of a speed limit in Germany’s Autobahn. Germans believe that it is far safer to drive at higher speeds and it seems to working well for them. Fatalities in car crashes are rare on the Autobahn.
The National Motoring Association speaks out about this saying that those who drive slower, like 10 mph slower than what the prevailing speed is – are likely more to get entangled in a car accident. This goes in line with the manual for driver’s education that tell you that the safest speed you can drive in is the one that is ambient to the speed of the ongoing traffic that is observed around you. For interstate highways with 70 mph speed limits, you should also be driving at that speed. Go lower by 10 mph and you can get involved in an accident – or at least more likely.
Beyond the toll road being built for motorists’ safety driving at 85 mph, there are other factors that the Texas Transportation Commission is looking at. For now, it’s 85 mph speed that’s set for the new toll highway that stretches up to 130 miles connecting San Antonio and Austin.
