Based on Simone Wilson’s investigation made for Weekly Standard, she discovered that there are more than 20,000 hit-and-run accidents occurring in Los Angeles annually which has already reached an epidemic level. However, top man of LAPD, Charlie Beck keeps no data and is not even aware that this is the number of people injured by the phenomena. Alex Thompson, an activist in the Bicycle group, already reported that 4,000 of the 20,000 annual hit-and-runs are felonies.

One of the probable reasons of the hit-and-run epidemic in Los Angeles is the ruling that if a drive flees from the scene, he/she can no longer be arrested after three years.

Mike Gatto, an L.A. California Assemblyman was able to read the report especially the data that more than half of crashes in Los Angeles were a hit-and-run case. Assemblyman Gatto pledged to improve the limitation loopholes. He announced that he will submit a bill that would eliminate the three-year limitation give to hit-and-run conmen.

The bill submitted by Gatto will extend the limitation of the statute of commission of such offenses to three years from the date of committing the felony or just a year after the identification of the suspect by law enforcement; whichever is later.
