A car heading eastward in the westbound lanes in Montgomery slammed into car as it was going into a wrong direction.

State police pointed out that they are charging a Pennsylvania man with drunken driving after he crashed head-on with another car as he was traveling in the wrong direction on I-84.

After a 4:48 o’clock in the afternoon incident on Sunday along the Montgomery in Orange County, the erring operator, identified as James G. Onyango, age 50 and resident of 2815 Valley View Drive, Buskill, PA, was arrested. Police said Onyango was driving a gray 2003 Toyota Corolla, heading eastbound in the westbound traffic lanes.

Police recounted that Onyango’s car crashed head-on to a 2011 Ford Escape that also included two other cars in the wreck. There was also a fifth vehicle that spun out to avoid the pileup.

Richard Randazzo, who was the driver of the Escape, was transported to St. Lukes Hospital in Newburgh, where police said he was treated for minor injuries and was later released.

Police investigated the case of Onyango after which he was being charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated. Test conducted by the police revealed that his blood alcohol level was higher that .18 % that was more than twice the legal limit.

He was also charged with: reckless endangerment; reckless driving; traffic violations for driving the wrong way on the highway; and traffic violations for having an open container of alcohol in his car.

Onyango was released as his hearing was set for Jan. 3 in The own of Montgomery Court. Police are asking that anyone who may have witnessed the incident call them at 845-457-1388.
