The police were in search of a truck driver on Thursday for the accident that killed a 75 year old woman while she was riding next to her daughter on a Thanksgiving shopping stint.
Nassau County Police Detective Gary Ferrucci had said that the truck driver they were in search for was not even probably aware that a rock had slid down from his truck and smacked through the windshield of a car and injured Rita Oill from Bayville, L.I. fatally.
Oill was shopping for supplies for the anticipated holiday meal together with one of her daughters, 39 year old Marie Waters, on Wednesday morning when the stone, which weighs 3 pounds, came at them from a truck that was travelling on an opposite direction on Glen Head Road, according to police and family members. Oill was a passenger in the car that her daughter, Marie Waters, was driving.
Bill Waters, Marie’s husband, had said that after the rock had smacked the hood of the car, a piece of debris had gone through the center of the windshield and hit the head of his mother-in-law.
Oill was brought to North shore University Hospital in Manhasset, L.I. and was declared dead.
Marie Waters, meanwhile, was receiving medical attention for her minor injuries and was subsequently released.
Anyone with information pertinent to the accident is asked by the police to come forward and call them at (800) 244-TIPS.
