US Public Interest Research Group Study Show More Young Adults Favoring Not to Drive

In a recent study that has been conducted about people on the streets, it has been found that people from the age group of 16 to 34 are choosing to get around by walking, riding their bike or using public transportation instead of driving their own cars.  This study was conducted by the US Public Interest Research Group.  From 2001 to 2009, it’s seen that there had been a 23% drop in the number of 18 year old to 34 year old drivers.  Still looking at the same age ranges, a spike of 16% was found in the number of walkers, 24% for bicyclists and 40% for people using public transportation.  The Federal Highway Administration has also seen a shift in the numbers of people having a driver’s license.  From the year 2000 to 2010, the number of people having a driver’s license dropped.

When the increased fuel prices, stiffer road laws and driving laws and also better technology which make it easier to use public transportation are some of the reasons why people opt for other ways to travel these days – it can also be due to avoidance of car accidents.  There’s so much risk to being in the middle of big metal machines going at zipping speeds.  Apart from it being safer to be on the roads walking on the sidewalk and being on public transport to work, it also does one good in terms of health.  Not to mention the impact of these practices on the environment.

Indeed, the risk of getting into a car crash is so high when you’re behind the wheel. Regardless if you drive with all your attention and focus on safety and regardless of your speed, you can make sure that you’re safer when you ditch your own vehicle to get to where you want to go.
