Customers who were buying bread had the surprise of their lives when a car crashed into the front of The Cookie Lady bakery at the Park Plaza Center at Woodbourne and Chickenfoot Roads in Middletown on Friday afternoon. The crash damaged the bakery’s door and a window. Jim Dunckley, husband of the store’s owner, Donna swept up broken glass as the damaged front door sits on its side at left.
According to Donna Dunckley, owner of The Cookie Lady, a small black KIA sports utility vehicle jumped the curb and crashed into the front of her business. Despite the door and the front window which were damaged by the crash and had to be removed, the bakery remained open.
Dunckley, who was sweeping up glass after the accident, said the vehicle had four occupants, all women, and she guessed the driver was about 60. Middletown police did not issue more information about the crash.
The vehicle sustained front-end damage and remained parked in front of the bakery.
The driver apparently had driven into the center and was looking for a parking space, and she later told investigators that her foot slipped off the brake and onto the gas. The pople inside the KIA sustained only minor injuries
An adjacent retail space was also damaged but it was vacant. It was formerly Anna’s Nails, but that business had moved to another location in the strip center.
Donna said that this kind of incident already happened before in this area. Vehicles also crashed into a pharmacy and later on another into a pizza place. Thereis no safe place, risk is everywhere.
