An early morning accident last Tuesday brought an Amarillo man to a local hospital with injuries that could be life-threatening, reported the authorities..
Amarillo police said in a news release that they responded to a call regarding an accident which took place at 1:07 in the morning. They learned that Michael Taylor Ross, age 24, had been riding a 2002 Suzuki motorcycle northbound on South Georgia Street at a high rate of speed.
As he was coming to Southwest 16th Avenue, he applied the bike’s brakes and for unknown reason, the motorcycle drop to the pavement and slam into the back of a 2003 Dodge Neon that was also traveling northbound on South Georgia Street.
Police reported that Ross was wearing a helmet, and the three people in the Neon did not sustain injuries.
Another accident happened to a cyclist who was traveling along Furys Ferry Road last Monday. Columbia County Sheriff’s Office identified the injured cyclist as a bicycle deputy Mark Benson 60. He was hit by a truck Monday while riding along Furys Ferry Road in McCormick County, S.C.
According to a hospital spokesperson Deputy, Mark Benson was in fair condition Tuesday at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital. The victim was a 16-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, who is currently assigned to the Special Operations Division Bike Patrol.
During the time of the mishap, Benson was off duty and riding his personal bicycle along Furys Ferry Road about 3:15 o’clock in the afternoon, he was hit from the rear by a Ford F-150 truck. As investigation is ongoing, the police does not have complete information of the wreck. They are also trying to find the charges to be filed from the guilty party.
.A motorist traveling who was behind the truck said other vehicles were able to pass Benson, but it was only the female driver of the truck that hit him. Benson was airlifted by helicopter ambulance to MCG sustaining serious injuries.
