RICHLAND COUNTY, SC – A car chase on Tuesday afternoon near downtown Columbia ended with a car submerging in a pool at an apartment complex and one man in jail.
At about 4:45 in the afternoon, Fugitive Task Force department was in the vicinity of Longcreek Drive when they saw a vehicle driving recklessly, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
The Deputies attempted to pull the car over but the driver, Lavar Baker, 34, did not heed the deputies’ request. The deputies then continued to chase the vehicle.
The pursuit stopped when the driver jumped out of the vehicle. The car subsequently crashed through a fence and into a pool at Copperfield Apartments on Saluda Road.
The driver led a short on-foot chase but the deputies were able to apprehend the suspect. The deputies found him to be in possession of 4 ounces of marijuana.
Baker faces charges of failing to stop for blue lights along with the possession of controlled substances.\
Construction supervisor Donald Hood says that cleaning up the pool will be obviously difficult.
Hood added that he was surprised from the speed the way the suspect was able to land in the pool. Hood also said, “I’m surprised there wasn’t more damage.
The suspect was brought to Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center but has long since bonded out.
