Upper Chichester – A man from West Chester was charged by police involving an accident of hit-and-run that seriously injured a woman, age 75 last Tuesday night.

The driver identified as Javier Alvarez, age 25 and residing in Block 300, West Washington St. He is now languishing behind bars at Delco prison after he was caught fleeing the scene of the crash and related offenses.

The victim, who’s Id was not made public, is in the hospital sustaining serious injuries.

It was about 7:00 o’clock in the evening when the female pedestrian was trying to cross Rte. 322 in frontage of Dunkin’ Donuts.

Police talked with several witnesses who saw the crash and will be reviewing the videos from the surveillance camera from the Dunkin’ Donuts.

In the video footage, the woman was standing near the double yellow lines when she was struck by an SUV traveling westbound. She was thrown to the ground while the vehicle stopped briefly but then drove off speedily heading west toward the highway.

The victim sustained multiple compound fractures in her arms, legs, and pelvis. She was immediately delivered to the Medical Center of Crozer-Chester and underwent surgery.

Police gathered evidences from the crash scene that included an assembly of head lamp with a possible serial number and a cover of tow hook that indicated that the vehicle was a Ford Explorer.

A witness told police she was on Chelsea Road, near the crash scene, when she saw a gray Ford Explorer having Pennsylvania tags that run several stop sign. She noted the time was 7:12 o’clock in the evening and noted that the SUV’s front driver’s side had significant damage. She was even able to provide investigators with the license plate number of the gray SUV.

At about 2:00 o’clock that Wednesday morning, township police and officers spoke to the registered owner and learned that it was Alvarez and another man traveling in the Ford Explorer Tuesday night. Alvarez told police that he was scared and may have hit something.

Alvarez and his passenger were arrested and taken to the Police Headquarter of Upper Chichester where they were interrogated about the crash.

Alvarez admitted he driving the 2003 Ford Explorer along Conchester Highway at a speed of 45 mph when he hit a person crossing the road near the McDonald’s and Wal-Mart. He stopped his vehicle for a while but decided to flee.

Judge David R. Griffin of the Magisterial District arraigned Alvarez on charges of the following: (1) accidents involving death; (2) felony: (3) failure to stop & give aid; and (4) failure to notify police of an accident with injuries or a death. His bail was set at 10% of $250,000 and Alvarez was confined at Delco prison.

There was no info if the other Ford passenger was charged with a crime.
