According to Police Chief Kevin Valentine as of 10:50 pm the northbound lane of Route 22 (Morristown Road) was closed due to a car crash. The roadway remained close in both directions the following morning.
Reports indicate that the incident was reported to police at 6:14 am. A call was received from the On Star call center reporting a motor vehicle crash near North Finley Avenue.
Police responded and observed that a telephone pole near the front of Somerset Hills Bank was snapped in half as a result of the crash. Officers also note that the only vehicle in the crash scene was located a short distance away in the parking lot of the bank. Extensive damage was observed from the vehicle and the occupant was unconscious in the driver’s seat.
The driver was extricated from the vehicle by Bernardsville Police Officer John Paul Tay and Steven Seiple. According to them the driver was not breathing and had no pulse when they first observed him inside the car.
The officers immediately administered CPR and used a cardiac defibrillator in order to revive the victim. They later received assistance from members of the Bernardsville First Aid Squad and Fire Department. The driver Eugene Henry 63 of Wallkill, NY was transported to Morristown Memorial Hospital by the Bernardsville First Aid Squad where he was treated for injuries.
Bernardsville Police Officers John Paul Tay and Steven Seiple extricated the driver from the vehicle. Officers reported he was not breathing and had no pulse when they first observed him in the car.
Wallkill was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Pickup truck. Police closed Route 202 in both directions pending response from the Jersey Central Power and Light Company and Verizon. Repairs continued throughout the day.
The road closure caused extensive traffic delays and snarls throughout Bernardsville and Basking Ridge. Traffic began to clear at around 10:30am.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation. No other details were released as of this writing.
