CANOGA PARK, LOS ANGELES — An elderly woman who plowed her vehicle through a Target store injured two shoppers in Canoga Park on Friday.
The incident occurred approximately 5:30 in the afternoon. The vehicle, driven by a 72-year-old woman, slammed 50-60 feet through the store’s rear metal emergency exit doors and to the electronics department and then to two customers. Paramedics rushed to the scene.
One victim, a 29-year-old woman, sustained serious head injury and is listed under critical condition while the other victim, a 56-year-old man, sustained hip injury.
According to the Los Angeles City Fire Capt. Jaime Moore, the incident was like threading a needle. He said when you observe how the street is positioned, there is an intersection right before those doors where one can drive straight through and go through those doors.
The elderly female driver was apparently coming down from a parking garage off ramp when it drove straight through the doors without pressing the brakes.
The suspect’s son said that she believed that her mother had accidentally hit the gas instead.
The sight of crews having to push the BMW from inside the store to the outside was startling for the shoppers.
Witness James Weiss from Chatsworth said that the sight of the mess left behind the crash along with the tapes is not something you see when you go to Target.
By Friday night, the vehicle remains under investigation.
