Newark —An early morning hit-and-run crash early morning in Newark has left one person dead as authorities are on the lookout for driver.
Thomas Fennelly who is Essex County’s chief assistant prosecutor reported that at least one pedestrian was fatally hit at the corner of McCarter Highway and Market Street at around midnight. After the crash, the driver drove his vehicle away from the scene.Movie All Is Lost (2013)
Fennelly said that emergency crews transported the pedestrian to a University Hospital but due to life –threatening injuries, the victim was pronounced dead after 12:52 that morning.
.The name of the victim was not released pending notification of the nearest kin.
Fennelly announced that investigation will continue with the Essex County Major Crimes Task Force leading the probe.
Andy Soto, age 27, was the driver of the vehicle that hit and killed the victim identified as Khendrai Williams, age 29 at the intersection of Market St. and McCarter Highway at after midnight. The joint statement was announced by Eugene Venable who is Newark Police Director and Carolyn Murray, Acting Essex County Prosecutor.
Williams was rushed to neighboring University Hospital but due to critical injuries, he died a short time after admission.
Investigators and the Major Crimes Task Force of Essex County Prosecutor’s Office were informed by witnesses that the errant vehicle fled from the scene; however, state troopers found it parked on a street near Newark’s Passaic River later that morning.
Chief assistant prosecutor in Murray’s office, Thomas S. Fennelly said that upon the location of the vehicle, detectives were able to catch Soto a short time later.
Soto is now facing the following charges: (1) vehicular manslaughter; (2) hit-and-run as he fled the scene of an accident that resulted to death; and (3) failure to assist an injured victim. On a bail amounting to $100,000, he is being held at the Essex County Jail.
Khendrai Williams was the pedestrian who was hit and later died in an accident along Market Street and McCarter Highway in Newark, New Jersey. It occurred that dismal Sunday at approximately 30 minutes after midnight.
Williams who was a resident of East Orange was the victim who was pronounced dead a few minutes after admission in the University Hospital.
CBS New York released the news that an SUV killed pedestrian but fled from the scene. They added that State Police found and arrested the suspect a few hours later. Suspect is identified as 27-years-old Andy Soto also from Newark. However, the police did not elaborate how they identified Soto as the driver who left the scene after hitting Williams. Aside from a case of hit and run, Soto is further charged with vehicular homicide.
