Officials of Chicago Police Department (CPD) identified the two victims as twin brothers who died during the morning crash last Saturday. The 20-year old driver was also killed and a 15-year-old girl was injured. The car crash killed at least three young people.
Officer Michael Sullivan of the Chicago Police Department News Affairs reported that the accident occurred at 8:30 o’clock Saturday morning in no.10200 block, South State St. along the neighborhood of Roseland.
Cook County medical examiner’s office stated that they have identified the fatalities as twin brothers Diapolis and Deabloe Banks, age 22 and residents of Block No. 200 at 109th West Place. The 20-year-old female driver was not yet identified. The three victims died of critical injuries from the crash.
According to Officer John Mirabelli of the Police News Affairs Office, the 20-year old female driver died on the scene while Banks twins expired at the area hospitals. The twins were transported to the Oak Lawn’s Advocate Christ Medical Center and at the Hospital of John H. Stroger in Cook County.
Mirabelli recounted that the 20-year-old female operator was driving her vehicle, a Kia 2008 Optima going north along State Street. Due to an argument which took place inside the vehicle, she lost control of the wheel and crashed into some cars that were parked beside the street.
The woman driver, her 22-year-old twin boyfriend who was seated in the front seat and twin brother who seated at his back was all trapped inside the Kia. Emergency crew had to use the Jaw of Life to extricate them.
The driver died on the scene, the boyfriend expired at the Christ Hospital and the twin brother succumbed at Stroger.
The 15-year-old girl who was at the back seat was the sole survivor. She was transported to Christ Hospital and is said to be in stable condition.
Of the cars that were slammed by the Kia, one was wrapped around a utility pole, another car was an SUV that over turned to its side with front-end damages, a compact car also sustained front-end damage and another car was pushed to the middle of the intersection.
In at least two vehicles, the air bags deployed. Only four cars were damaged and except for the four car occupants of the Kia, no one else was injured.
January 13, 2013 — Last Saturday, in the neighborhood of Lincoln Park, an elderly operator lost control of the vehicle and crashed into an apple store.
Officer Joshua Purkiss of the North Avenue police said that the incident took place at around 6:15 o’clock in the afternoon in Block 800 West North Avenue.
The victim was immediately delivered to the Advocate Masonic Medical Center of Illinois and according to the report of the Fire Department of Chicago, he remained in stable condition.
Shirley Susman witnessed the entire episode as she was just standing across the street. She said that she heard the screeching of brakes and saw a car heading straight to the Apple Store. There were some people looking out of the window and they all ran when they saw the car.
Except for damages incurred in the store and the driver, no one else was hurt.
January 13, 2013 – For Illinois State Police., the cause of the11-car pile-up crash were icy roads and freezing rain.
The mishap occurred at around 11:06 o’clock in the evening at the Expressway of Elgin-O’Hare at the vicinity of Gary Avenue, as reported by Master Sgt. Bart Lamb of the Illinois State Police.
Lamb said that there were 11 vehicles involved which might have been caused by the weather which all at once turned into freezing rain and instant ice
It was fortunate that only two people sustained minor injuries and opt not to go to the hospital, Lamb added.
National Weather Service announced that there will be a mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow that will continue overnight in the Chicago area accompanied by spotty freezing drizzle.
