DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. –
A multi-vehicular collision involving a tractor-trailer truck and several other vehicles on Wednesday in Douglas County claimed the lives of two people and left several others injured, according to authorities.
The incident occurred at about 10:30 in the morning on Thornton Road near South Blairs Bridge Road wherein, according to Georgia State Patrol trooper, a tractor trailer truck struck a white Nissan. The Nissan then hit several other cars.
Santana Ambrose, a witness of the crash, said that the 18-wheeler had tried to step on the brakes but both vehicles were going too fast that both collided and the effect a chain reaction.
According to authorities in Douglas County, a total of 10 people from the six vehicles were involved in the incident. The 35-year-old driver of the Nissan, Michelle Kamika Chinnis from Smyrna, perished after being removed from the vehicle while a passenger inside the Nissan, 44-year-old Tracy P. Downer from Atlanta, was declared dead on scene. Five people, two children and three adults, sustained serious injuries and was taken to Grady Hospital. Another five people received treatment at the scene. Extrication of the victims took almost an hour.
As officials reconstructed the accident, Thornton Road was temporarily shut down for several hours. The road was later reopened by 4 in the afternoon.
GSP officials have yet to determine how fast the tractor-trailer was traveling and so far, no charges have been filed yet.
