The death of pedestrian, identified as Janice Phelps, age 56, resident of Murray was the result of a vehicle-pedestrian accident that occurred in the parking lot at the southwest corner of Sycamore and South 12th streets Tuesday night.

Calloway County Coroner Rick Harris pronounced Phelps’ death at approximately 7:34 o’clock in the evening of Tuesday in the emergency room at Murray-Calloway County Hospital. According to Harris, Phelps was taken to the Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Office in Louisville Wednesday morning and that the preliminary autopsy showed that Phelps likely died of multiple blunt force trauma to the torso and head. But it will take around several weeks before the autopsy results are official.

According to a press release from Sgt. Scott Purcell with the Murray Police Department, operator identified as Ethan Boley, 21, of Elkton, was pulling away from Family Video in her 2002 GMC pickup truck and turned down the center aisle of the parking lot. At this juncture, Phelps was walking toward the stores when she was hit by Boley’s truck.

Police were called to the scene at approximately 6:31 o’clock in the evening. Investigation under Purcell and Officer David Howe are continuing at this time.

Car accidents are indeed ubiquitous as of November 20, 2012, another accident occurred at 6:11 o’clock which involved only minor injuries. A wrecker has been requested and is on the way to clear traffic.

Due to the two-vehicle mishap, both northbound lanes and one southbound lane are blocked on Interstate 71 North near Zorn Avenue. The accident has traffic backed up from downtown Louisville to the Watterson Expressway.
