TABERNACLE — New Jersey State Police stated that the parents of a Trenton police officer died in a Burlington County car crash last night when their vehicle spun out of control amid the snowstorm and was broadsided by a van.

State Police Sgt. Adam Grossman said parents of Officer Walter Rivera identified as Jose Perdomo, age 74, and Edith Perdomo, age 70, resident of Hamilton were heading north on Route 206 in Tabernacle at 9:15 o’clock in the evening when the accident occurred.

It appeared that their Buick LeSabre malfunctioned on the snowy highway and spun into the oncoming lane. Edith Perdomo died at the scene while Jose Perdomo, who was operating the vehicle, was taken to a Virtual Memorial hospital in Mount Holly where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

Rivera’s parents were a loving couple dedicated to one another. They were always together, they were always happy and it was like true, true love, said Mercer County Undersheriff Pedro Medina who was a former Trenton police officer.

Jose Perdomo was the owner of the Bori Cuba store on South Clinton Avenue in Trenton, selling records and other items. He was such an industrious man and continued to go to work every day despite being in his 70s. He was one of those old-timers who just loved to work, Medina said.

The Perdomos were part of Medina’s extended family as well since Edith Perdomo was the cousin of Medina’s mother.

Policemen’s Benevolent Association president George Dzurkoc said the city police department and police union have reached out to Rivera and his family.

Rivera was currently assigned to the bike unit; his partner in the unit drove Rivera down to the hospital in Burlington County last night, Dzurkoc said.

The car the Perdomos were riding in was hit on the passenger side in the southbound lanes by a van driven by Peter Rossi near the intersection with Hawkin Road. Rossi, the driver of the van, suffered only minor injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment.

At the time of the crash, it was snowing and weather could have been a factor in causing the accident, Grossman said. The cause of the crash is unknown and remains under investigation. No summonses had been issued as of this afternoon.
