Spokesperson Ruy Lozano of the Fire Department of Houston confirmed that there were around13 spectators injured; however, the 11 suffered ver minor injuries and were treated at the scene. Lozano said only two were taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The accident in Turn 5 was a good reminder of the fatal crash of Dan Wheldon back in 2011 at Las Vegas where competitors had to race through the wreckage.

Race winner was Will Power, who broke his back in Las Vegas crash while Scott Dixon took control of the Indy Car championship race last Sunday. He passed by teammate Franchitti in an attempt to get an update on his condition.

The accident resulted after Franchitti and Takuma Sato’s contact that sent Franchitti’s car over Sato’s and straight into the fence. This was the moment when parts and pieces from both cars were scattered into the grandstand. Franchitti’s car was badly damaged as it bounced back onto the track. At this time, the car operated by racer E.J. Viso crashed into the car of Sato.

The field was immediately frozen hindering Dixon from his final attempt to pass by Power who won the race. Dixon was Saturday’s first race winner for the doubleheader weekend and just settled as second after Franchitti’s crash.

Due to the accident, Dixon was not able to win although he was leading by several points after Helio Castroneves suffered from several mechanical failures.

Although Castroneves had a 49-point lead over Dixon, he had gearbox problem Saturday allowing Dixon to pull within eight points. Castroneves finished 23rd.

The team eventually replaced his gearbox. For Castroneves, the race is not over; and things go up and down.

Team owner Penske said that Castroneves will likely have to change his engine before the finale which will incur a 10-spot penalty on the starting grid at Fontana.

Penske praised the attitude of Power for holding off Dixon for the victory. While Power said that his job in Fontana will be to help his teammate.

Power said that by going into Fontana, it is all for Helio to win a championship, so he can do whatever can help Helio to win the race.
