ARLINGTON, Texas – Three people died after a three-vehicle traffic accident on I- 30 in the Dallas area that placed a suspected drunken driver in police custody.

According to Arlington police, the mishap occurred early Wednesday that caused the death of a man, a woman and an infant who were riding inside a small car.

Investigators believed that the pickup truck hit the rear of the car. Police stated that the damaged car was then stopped on I-30 when it was again hit by a larger truck pulling a flatbed trailer.

Police said that the pickup truck driver tried to flee but was caught in a nearby wooded area.

Police caught the truck driver who was identified as Benjamon Ray Stewart, age 41 and resident of Arlington. He was held without bond based on three counts of infractions: (1) intoxication manslaughter; and (2) one count of failure to stop and render aid. He has not yet hired a lawyer.

According to public records, he was arrested in 2002 and did not contest DUI charge.

Police stated that the three victims were heading east along I-30 when a pickup rear-ended their small sedan.

Police spokesperson Christopher Cook said that without working taillights the tiny car was left disabled in the center lane of the highway.

After a while, a Ford pickup pulling a landscape trailer struck the car. Police believed that was the real fatal crash.

The impact killed the driver of the small car and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman and child were admitted to the Health Arlington Memorial Hospital in Texas where they expired later.

Meanwhile, the operator drove his pickup on to the outside shoulder trying to leave the scene, but his vehicle became disabled, too. So, he fled on foot and hid in a wooded area.

Rescuers spotted the man as he tried to leave the scene, and officers took him into custody. Investigators said that the man will be charged with (1) three counts of intoxication manslaughter; (2) one count of failure to stop;  and (3) failure to render aid.

The eastbound lanes of Interstate 30 have reopened about four hours after this morning’s crash.

The two -vehicle wreck of the Toyota Camry and blue pickup took place at around 2:30 o’clock in the morning on the intersection of Fielder Rd. and Eastchase Parkway.

Two adults and a child died at the scene and had to be cut from the wreckage. They were taken to a hospital and later died.

The pickup driver tried to flee from the scene but he caught and quickly arrested.

Pending result of investigation, the identities of victims and suspect are not released.

Due to the mishap, all traffic going east is being forced off the highway and are made to pass Eastchase while the police conduct their investigation. There is no announcement when it will be reopened.
